Since I’m a medical student I thought I’ll post something like RAS once in a while and I tried my best to keep it as simple as possible to read and understand.

You may have heard of it in other words such as Manifesting or Law of Attraction.

It is one of the terms used to explain the concept behind thoughts and self-talk in the personal development world.

What’s RAS?

Whenever something comes into the brain through one or more of our senses, the RAS determines if this is important enough to bring to our attention. If it’s not, we don’t notice of it.

For example, if you’re in a crowded room and people are talking all around you and everything is loud, the brain registers none of it. But if someone happens to say your name, suddenly the RAS recognizes the importance of that word and immediately lets it through.

Before you know it, in a loud room where you couldn’t hear a thing, you’re now looking for the person who said your name.

Here’s another example and it’s widely known.

Let’s say you are going to buy a bike. You walk into a showroom and there is a beautiful bike right in front of you. You immediately think, “Wow! I love this bike!” You take the bike for a test drive and asking some questions as you flip through the brochure.

Then you bought the bike.

Here’s the thing, As soon as you leave the showroom, you look in mirror and, “WOAH! There’s the same bike behind me!” As you keep driving and there it is again.

You can’t help but think, “Wow. This bike has gotten so popular all of a sudden!” However, the truth is that the bike was always there.

The bike isn’t what’s new. What’s new is You’re noticing it this time.

Before you went to the showroom, it was just random bike for your RAS, so it got filtered out. However, the bike suddenly has your attention and the RAS is letting it through.

Why’s it important?

Whether you like it or not, RAS has your focus, attention, and prioritization. This is precisely why aligning RAS with what you want to achieve is absolutely imperative.

Do a quick test on yourself right now.

Measure your inner voice – it’s a positive or a negative one?

I can tell you right now that the odds are it’s not a very positive voice.

It’s just human nature. We’re trained to be generally negative.

But for a minute, imagine that you keep your inner voice positive, uplifting, and hopeful throughout the day.

How would that directly impact your day?

Changing your inner dialogue will instantly train your RAS to tune you into decisions and action that are in alignment with your goals. Your RAS can actually become your most powerful ally.

So, how do you train your thoughts and self-talk? This is what I do…

Every morning after my meditation session I take some time to remind myself of what I want in my life and the steps to do in order to attain it.

And changing background in my phone and pc, I’m “tricked” into seeing it many times throughout the day. You can’t help but bring your focus to it repeatedly.

You’re also constantly communicating with your RAS and letting it know that these are the things that are the most important to you.

Here’s what I want you to do right now. Let’s find out how positive you’re;

This is a simple test, but you have to be brutally honest with yourself for it to work.

I want you to track your thoughts for just a day.

Grab a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle.
On the left side, write, “Negative.”
On the right side, write, “Positive.”

Every time you have a positive thought, one where you feel good or feel a buzz, put a mark in the positive column.
Every time you have a negative thought that results in fear, frustration, or anger, put a mark in the negative column.

At the end of the day, count the total number of marks, both negative and positive.

Which category won?

Just divide the total positive marks with the total number of marks all together and you’ll have a percentage. That’s how much positive you are.
