Read this before you set your resolutions

READ THIS BEFORE YOU SET YOUR RESOLUTIONS

First of all.

Happy New Year!!!

2018 is gone and 2019 is here.

It’s time for new year resolutions. About that…

New Year’s resolutions and goals

Are they helpful?

Will you stick to it?

Should you even bother?

While a lot of people want to speed ahead to focus on a fresh New Year goals, don’t underestimate the power of learning from the past.

There’s a lot of wisdom to be mined from the past twelve months, if you know how to find it.

So before you decide on your New Year goals, take the time to reflect on what you’ve learned these past year.

No doubt, some beautiful things have happened in the past twelve months. You’ve likely had a fair share of struggles and setbacks, too.

You may think ‘Why I’m talking about the past when we should  focus on this new year?’

That’s because…

Most people FAIL to meet their New Year’s resolutions.

I’m not discouraging you, but there are studies proving this every year.

Why is that?

I think it’s because of 2 reasons;

  1. The resolution isn’t specific enough
  2. You don’t have accountability to those goals

Here’s my tip: Make “SMART” goals:

SMART goals

SMART goals are a great way to set goals for yourself, but SMART goals are NOT foolproof.

You still have to show up and “do the work” to meet your goal.

You have to find the inner motivation to pursue your goal… so you can KEEP going even when it’s hard.

Because without the motivation… I mean…

Without a meaningful reason WHY you want to achieve your goal, you simply won’t pursue them.

And when you have your “reason why”, it’s much easier to wake up that extra 30 minutes early…

Here’s how you can find your why ?

1. Take 2 minutes to write out all the things that are the most important to you in your life.

If being inspired and motivated is important, write “being inspired and motivated.”

If reading is important to you, write “reading.”

If playing chess is important to you, write “playing chess.”

You get my point.

Alright, have you done it?

It’s okay if you just do it in your mind for now… but really do try this exercise on paper. (Put a reminder in your phone right now).

2. Take 2 minutes to write down how you ACTUALLY spend your time each day.

What’s your basic schedule look like?

As you look it over, mentally calculate how much time you spend each day doing each of the major things on this list.

For instance, How much time do you spend commuting? Working? Watching movies/news? Checking social media? Reading books? Building YOUR business?

(Be really honest with yourself to get the most from this exercise!!)

What most people find when they do this exercise, is they aren’t living in alignment with what’s important to them, their values.

They might have said financial independence, fulfillment with work and life, helping people, and meditating are important…

But they really spend two hours binge watching, an hour on social media… and only thirty minutes “building” their business and busy being busy.

In other words, just wondering, “How am I going to pull it all off?”

So what’s happening here?

Most of us don’t take the time to review what’s important to us and consciously ask ourselves,

“Am I living in alignment with what’s important to me?

Am I living in alignment with my values?”

What we do is…

We get stuck in bad habits

So from this exercise, notice the places where you are NOT living in alignment with what’s important to you.

And work on that.

If your daily schedule reflects your values, great!

You’re all set.

But if your daily schedule doesn’t reflect what’s important to you, Make 2019 the year you finally OWN YOUR schedule.

DON’T let another year slip by…

…another year where you suddenly “wake up” on December 31st, 2019 and realize you could have been building your own business, and a LIFE, that is YOURS.
